That day I knew the News - Part 2: Working in a Drug Dealer's former Office

Yesterday I've shared Part 1 of my 2 stories, about when you watch the news, and you see someone you know on there (and not in a good way at all). Here's number 2.

That day I knew the News - Part 2: Working in a Drug Dealer's former Office

(again... innocent until proven guilty...)

Last week this picture was on the front page in our local newspaper:

I'm from Europe as you guys probably still remember. So I'm still not used to all the guns around here. Underneath the picture it read:

"Drug Bust: ... Police Chief Billy W ... and ... County Sheriff Mike M ... reveal multiple firearms and over $100K in illegal drugs confiscated during a traffic stop of a couple north of ... City."

Wait a minute! "..stop of a COUPLE." ... like in 2 people. I was shocked. But didn't really think much about it. Honestly, I was just happy those guns were off the streets. Period.

The next day I go to work. This is a small town - around 19000 people live here. So gossip spreads QUICK! It didn't take long until the first member walks in, telling us the name of the couple. It was supposedly one of our ex coworkers and her husband. Gossip is gossip, so I didn't really believe it. But the next day, the mugshots appeared in the paper. And let me tell you this: I was shocked. It was her. But then again - not HER. Not the way she used to look like.

This lady used to work for us, then changed into another department within our foundation. She was beautiful, smart, funny, a mother, a wife, part of the community ... Then one day she disappeared, and I never really heard anything ever since then.

Obviously she got together with the wrong people, and started doing and selling - DEALING - meth. Big time. This mugshot shows a woman - well, you can tell it is her, but it is so very sad at the same time. We all know those graphics on the internet, showing people before, and a few months or years into meth abuse. Let me tell you this: Those pictures don't lie. It's sad.

I have no idea how someone can lose control over their life so bad. Jeopardizing your family, your job, your life. Her old office actually is my new office. And this whole story just makes me cringe...

Today I saw an update on this story. Now even the FBI is involved. Geez...

So this was my second story. Again I ask: have you ever experienced something like this? When news hit "close to home"?

That day I knew the News - Part 1: I was in a Team with a Monster

You know, we all watch the news. Well, I hope. We all discuss the news. But you know what is a very odd feeling? When you watch the news, and you see someone you know on there. And not in a good way at all.

It happens. Once in a while. But to me it happened twice within a few weeks. It's on my mind a lot, and that's why I want to blog about it. Maybe some of you can relate. You think you know someone, but then - oh well. Let me share those 2 stories. Today I share number 1. Tomorrow number 2. So stay tuned.

That day I knew the News - Part 1: I was in a Team with a Monster

(ok... innocent until proven guilty...)

I went to a manager seminar a couple of months ago. My job sends us to stuff like this a lot. It's usually a fun and educating day out of the office.

This specific seminar was in a town 30 miles from here. Our little group arrived, and one of the other groups of managers there was whole bunch of people from our County's Sheriff department. The ones I know, I usually get along with well. There were a few new faces though.

At one point we've had to get together in groups to work on stuff together. We just went by "ok, you sit right next to me, so hey, let's be a group!" One guy from the Sheriff department was in my group. Before we were doing this group work, he already stood out. Not really in a good way. More like trying to be funny. While being not. Really. Being kind of a smartpants. Polite, nice, but somehow a little odd. Awkward might be the right word.

Anyway... we worked in our group, had conversations, discussions. The seminar was over, farewell, see you around, bla bla. It's a small town and a small county, so...

After that seminar I met said guy about 3 or 4 times around the community, we chatted for a few minutes. Then, early June, the news hit. I clicked on a link on my Facebook timeline. And there he was. Picture and everything. He got arrested:
"A child pornography investigation has led to the arrest of a ... deputy.
The ... County Sheriff's Office says Sergeant Justin C ... was arrested by State Police.
The SO says C... has been fired and the agency is cooperating with the investigation.
C ..., 37, of ..., is being held in the ... County Jail.
He is charged with Access with Intent to View Child Porn and Receipt of Child Pornography."
THIS is one of the worst crimes in my opinion. Keep you sick hands off of children!!! I know he's innocent until proven guilty, but these news made me feel so sick. And they wouldn't go ahead and arrest someone just because they feel like it.

You know, you start thinking, why didn't we see something is wrong with him. Funny dude being a sicko like this. If it's true - how long was he doing this? Was watching this sick sh*t the only thing he did? You start looking at pictures on his Facebook profile (sure you were friends with him on there!!) differently. Today there actually was an update on this case in the newspaper.
"Former ... SO deputy indicted on child porn charges
... A former ... County sheriff’s deputy has been indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of child pornography charges."
We will see how this story ends...

So this was my first story. The second one will go live tomorrow. Have you ever experienced something like this? When news hit "close to home"?
