That day I knew the News - Part 1: I was in a Team with a Monster

You know, we all watch the news. Well, I hope. We all discuss the news. But you know what is a very odd feeling? When you watch the news, and you see someone you know on there. And not in a good way at all.

It happens. Once in a while. But to me it happened twice within a few weeks. It's on my mind a lot, and that's why I want to blog about it. Maybe some of you can relate. You think you know someone, but then - oh well. Let me share those 2 stories. Today I share number 1. Tomorrow number 2. So stay tuned.

That day I knew the News - Part 1: I was in a Team with a Monster

(ok... innocent until proven guilty...)

I went to a manager seminar a couple of months ago. My job sends us to stuff like this a lot. It's usually a fun and educating day out of the office.

This specific seminar was in a town 30 miles from here. Our little group arrived, and one of the other groups of managers there was whole bunch of people from our County's Sheriff department. The ones I know, I usually get along with well. There were a few new faces though.

At one point we've had to get together in groups to work on stuff together. We just went by "ok, you sit right next to me, so hey, let's be a group!" One guy from the Sheriff department was in my group. Before we were doing this group work, he already stood out. Not really in a good way. More like trying to be funny. While being not. Really. Being kind of a smartpants. Polite, nice, but somehow a little odd. Awkward might be the right word.

Anyway... we worked in our group, had conversations, discussions. The seminar was over, farewell, see you around, bla bla. It's a small town and a small county, so...

After that seminar I met said guy about 3 or 4 times around the community, we chatted for a few minutes. Then, early June, the news hit. I clicked on a link on my Facebook timeline. And there he was. Picture and everything. He got arrested:
"A child pornography investigation has led to the arrest of a ... deputy.
The ... County Sheriff's Office says Sergeant Justin C ... was arrested by State Police.
The SO says C... has been fired and the agency is cooperating with the investigation.
C ..., 37, of ..., is being held in the ... County Jail.
He is charged with Access with Intent to View Child Porn and Receipt of Child Pornography."
THIS is one of the worst crimes in my opinion. Keep you sick hands off of children!!! I know he's innocent until proven guilty, but these news made me feel so sick. And they wouldn't go ahead and arrest someone just because they feel like it.

You know, you start thinking, why didn't we see something is wrong with him. Funny dude being a sicko like this. If it's true - how long was he doing this? Was watching this sick sh*t the only thing he did? You start looking at pictures on his Facebook profile (sure you were friends with him on there!!) differently. Today there actually was an update on this case in the newspaper.
"Former ... SO deputy indicted on child porn charges
... A former ... County sheriff’s deputy has been indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of child pornography charges."
We will see how this story ends...

So this was my first story. The second one will go live tomorrow. Have you ever experienced something like this? When news hit "close to home"?

Please share!

  2. OK, first I will answer the question posed, yes I have had this happen to me. It was 15+ yrs ago, when I heard a news story about a mobile meth lab. Turned out to be a high school boyfriend. Shocking yes, but until PROVEN (given your situation and it being FEDERAL, odds are its true) EVERYONE IS PRESUMED INNOCENT! Problem is, once a person's name/photo is shown, society IMMEDIATELY BELIEVES THE WORST and that person is LABELED FOR LIFE! In today's age, it is FAR TOO EASY for "evidence" to be planted or not even really needed and all it takes is a vindictive ex to completely ruin someone's life. I've had this happen with two extremely close individuals in my life, INDIVIDUALS WHO WOULD SOONER DIE than do what they were accused of; but who's lives have been irrevocably impacted by vindictive ex-spouses. So don't be too quick to judge. The next time it could be you or someone you love.
